Actress Carice van Houten “scared out of her wits” over “Game Of Thrones” casting |
 |
If you haven’t heard, actress Carice van Houten was one of several actors cast in HBO’s fantasy drama Game Of Thrones last week. The Dutch actress, who last year played the villain opposite Sean Bean in the horror film Black Death, was cast as Lady Melisandre of Asshai, the “Red Priestess” of dangerous beauty who influences King Stannis (Stephen Dillane) with her new religion.
Van Houten recently spoke about her role in an interview which you can find on YouTube. You probably won’t understand it unless you speak Dutch. Thankfully, someone’s translated it into English, and here’s what van Houten has to say about Lady Melisandre.
“She is a very manipulative woman, a priestess, a fundamental character,” van Houten says. “She knows how to twist men around her little finger, in all sorts of ways.”
Van Houten also states that she’d been offered an earlier Game Of Thrones role, but had been forced to turn it down at the time. “When they asked me to try out for a different role, I was available and interested. That’s how I wound up in a very small room in Ireland in front of five men, scared out of my wits.”
And while she feels “pressure to perform at the top of my game,” van Houten feels confident that both Game Of Thrones and Melisandre will be around for the foreseeable future: “[Game Of Thrones] is going to be around for a while, so I’ll be playing this role for the next few years. As far as I know, there could be as many as six more seasons. We’ll have to wait and see if the series remains popular or [HBO] decides to cancel it at some point. We don’t know how it will play out, but hopefully I will be on board for multiple seasons.”
Thanks to Winter-Is-Coming.net for the translation. Game of Thrones will return for its second season in spring 2012.

UK trailer for “Intruders” |
 |
The horror film from Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo stars Clive Owen, Carice van Houten, Daniel Brühl, Pilar Lopez de Ayala and Kerry Fox and will be released in the US October 7, 2011.
The film tells parallel stories of two families whose lives are disrupted by menacing apparitions: in Spain, a mother tries to protect her son from a faceless stranger, while in Britain, a young girl has terrifying dreams of a demon who becomes a real danger to her and her family.

Journalist writes glossy biography “Carice van Houten” |
 |
Film journalist Ab Zagt made with Carice a glossy biography about the life and career of the actress, a true portrait in words and images.
“Carice van Houten is a phenomenon in the Dutch film world. She is unanimously regarded as our best film actress. Therefore, a book about her life in this stage of her career is completely in place,” tells the author.
In this biography, people who had a major impact on her career speak about Carice (that includes Paul Verhoeven, Rutger Hauer, Halina Reijn, Pierre Bokma, Paul de Leeuw, Thom Hoffman, Reinout oerlemans and Theo Maassen). In addition to interviews, the book also contains previously unpublished photos of Carice and favorite portrait photos created by top photographers, including Anton Corbijn.

Carice joins “Game of Thrones” cast as sorceress Melisandre |
 |
Huge Game of Thrones casting news! Producers have filled the two biggest new roles of the show’s second season — a mysterious sorceress and a powerful contender for the Iron Throne.
These two major roles are paired together in the story: Melisandre is a powerful woman who counsels the late King Robert’s eldest younger brother, Stannis Baratheon, in his quest to claim the Iron Throne. She’s described as a seductive force possessing prophetic powers who’s willing to impose her religion on the world by any means necessary. Stannis, meanwhile, believes himself to be the Iron Throne’s rightful heir and is described as humorless and authoritative, with a strict moral code (his younger brother Renly, who also wants to be king, memorably described Stannis in the first season as having “the personality of a lobster”). But Stannis is gradually succumbing to the power of his newfound religion.
Melisandre will be played by Carice van Houten, a Dutch stage and film actress. She’s appeared in the movies Valkyrie and Repo Men. I think you’ll agree she looks just about perfect for Melisandre.
And Stannis will be played by… British actor Stephen Dillane, a talented Shakespearian thespian, best known to U.S. audiences by playing Thomas Jefferson in HBO’s John Adams.

The final major new role on HBO’s Game of Thrones has been filled: Irish actor Liam Cunningham has landed the part of Davos for the show’s second season.
Cunningham has appeared in many productions over the years, including Starz’ now defunct Camelot, the recent Clash of the Titans remake and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
A fan favorite from George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels, Davos Seaworth is a family man and former smuggler. He earned the nickname “The Onion Knight” after successfully getting food into Stannis Baratheon’s besieged castle during the war that put Robert Baratheon on the Iron Throne. The authoritarian Stannis gave Davos a knighthood for his actions — but also shortened some of his fingers for his criminal past. In season two, Stannis enlists Davos to help him seize the Iron Throne from King Joffrey.
